Saturday Morning Old Golfers (S.M.O.G)
The Saturday Morning Old Golfers play a 9-hole competition every Saturday morning.
Beginning in 1996, Golfers Ken Fisher, Brian Taylor, and Max Denham asked members of the Australasian Golf Club and the public to join them for 9 holes every Saturday Morning, with the objective of creating a fun and enjoyable experience for golfers of all levels and genders.
Special mention to Mike Eisling for setting up the computerized recording system for handicapping and Authur Dubery for setting up a weekly record for each player.
Playing seasons go from the start of October till the end of September. Handicaps are calculated after 3 rounds of golf and once you have a handicap you are eligible to win the competition. During your first 3 rounds, you can still win nearest-to-pin and putting prizes. Weekly prizes are presented for best putting round and 4 nearest to pin holes.
If players haven’t won after 5 weeks a stroke is added to their handicap, enabling everyone a chance to win. Furthermore, although highly suggested, there is no requirement to be a member of the club to play, just pay the green fee at the pro shop on arrival!
Smog Competition costs $4.00 for the game plus 0.20 cents for each nearest to pin holes and 0.20 for the putting competition. The $4.00 cost pays for an annual breakup luncheon with numerous prizes presented for various serious and fun categories!
Further special mention to Authur Dubery and after him Roland Lindell for their work for many years organizing everything. The batton has now been passed on to Clinton Connolly and Neil McFarlane.
We are happy to report SMOG has an average of 15-25 players a week. What’s your excuse? Get up early, join us, and have an enjoyable experience!
The Old Boys Social Golf Club
The Old Boys Social Golf Club plays an 18-hole competition every Thursday morning.
